Over the past 5 years or so, I have been absorbing
many styles of music, and experimenting with many musical textures.
As I explored the realm of Hindu devotional music, and the traditional
instrumental music of India, I was pulled into a vast world of emotion
and musical complexity that has forever won my heart and captivated
my intellectual interest. Stemming from my early explorations, I
have found myself moved by ethnic musics from many countries, including
Jewish, Islamic, Turkish, African and Tibetan to name only a few.
For some examples, see my Listening Habits
page.
In tandem with the exploration of musical genres,
I have been exploring the possibilities of the latest home recording
technology. Using samples, loops, sequencing and digital recording,
I am entering a new chapter in my songwriting, and loving every
minute of it. For a little more about my project studio, check out
my Studio Specs page.
Combine the inspiration of some of the most
powerful and spiritual music on the planet, and some of the most
creative technology available, and you get an intense palette of
musical possibilities. I am excited to have the opportunity to work
in such a rich medium. In the late 80's and early 90's, when I was
beginning my journey into 4-track recording (on a cassette-based
machine), I never would have expected the options that are available
to us today. Musicians are truly fortunate that we can now have
our visions expressed so easily, and with such depth.
But even with all of these changes, my philosophy
and approach to music still hinge on several assumptions. One of
them is that music is not merely for entertainment. Another is that
music is an expression of something beyond our conscious understanding.
I'm modeling my creative ethics after those of the East where music
is a spiritual experience. And while I'm not opposed to commercial
success per se, the creative process for me is a sacred act, and
the integrity of my work comes first.
There are many projects
in the works, and I continue to look for fellow artists who
are interested in the type of musical journey described above. If
you are a musician, and would like to learn more, check out the
Musicians Wanted page.
