Aug/Sept 2005 - Hazrat Inayat Khan is
many things to many people. To some he was a musician, to
others he is a guru and - at times - almost a prophet. My
interest in his message goes back to my high school years,
and his work contributed to my view that music is much more
than notes on the page, and much more than the commercialized
industry that we have today.
Having read several of his own works, I was
interested in the more mundane details of his life, so I
was happy to locate this rather old book on EBay. Sadly,
this biography was poorly written and at times seemed to
pander to an otherworldly view of this fascinating man.
The language at times is over the top,
to the point of ingratiating and flattering the subject.
I doubt that is what Hazrat would have wanted. In place
of a more authoritative autobiography, I suppose this will
do, but the reader should look closer at Hazrat's own works
(many of them online for free) for a better glimpse of what
he stood for.
