Bulu Rahman performing at Sakuntala Indian Restaurant in Bloomsburg
My name is Bulu Rahman. I was
born October, 25, 1972 in Bangladesh, an independent country
in South East Asia. After a nine-month war, Bangladesh became
independent from Pakistan on December 12, 1971. Three million
people died in the Liberation War. I salute those comrades
who fought and died for our motherland.
Bangladesh Flag
I also salute George Harrison and Pandit Ravi
Sankor who arranged a charity show at Madison Square Garden
for Bangladesh's people in that crisis moment.
I have three brothers. The eldest, Atique
Babu, is a renowned Bangladeshi singer. He graduated from
Dhaka University (the Eastern Oxford) with a degree in Biology.
My youngest brother recently became a doctor. My father
is an engineer, and my mom is a homemaker.
My wife Nancy is a doctorate student in the
Audiology program at Bloomsburg University, Pennsylvania.
Music is my passion. While growing up, our
family environment was totally music oriented. Atique Babu
practiced classical Bengali songs. When the master came
to teach Babu, I was listening with him. I learned classical
music when I was only nine. My vocal may not be as rich
as my brother's, but instead I chose to concentrate on instruments
like harmonium, tabla, dhol, and santoor.
I started tabla with grammatical lessons when
I was 10 years old. After graduating highschool, I also
went to Dhaka University like my brother. I completed a
Masters Degree in Botany in 1995. During that time I played
with Babu in various stage programs, including several performances
on national television programs in Bangladesh.
I have been playing tabla for about 20 years,
and I enjoy singing Bengali folk songs. I have traveled
to different sites in India and while there captured some
tips to play classical tabla. In 1993, my brother's first
album was released and included modern Bengali songs. I
played tabla and dhol on that album. That experience allowed
me to meet many classical musicians.
In 2001, I moved Bloomsburg University for
my Masters of Business Administration. During that period
I became president of Bangladesh Student Association. I
arranged musical programs such as Bangladeshi night. Jeremy
dePrisco attended one of our programs, and soon after we
began playing together. We are trying to create fusion with
Eastern and Western and improvised music. I love rock, blues,
and country music.
