2004 - I rarely read fiction, but this was one of those
books that I always wanted to read. I was so glad I did.
1984 should be required reading for anyone working
in the computer industry, and now I'm interested to see
the film version to see if it does the book any justice.
Not only have I lived through the year of
the book's title, like so many folks in the IT industry,
I've seen so much of this book come to pass. What does the
prophetic vision of Eric Blair really mean for us, with
our War on Terror, webcams, wireless networks and biometrics?
It was probably appropriate that the version
of this book that I read was an e-text copy that I printed
myself from the web. Nothing like the generic Times New
Roman to bring home the message of conformity.
One quibble... it's awfully short. I guess
I'm used to longer books, so when I read something like
this I feel like I'm missing out. There really could have
been more to the story, but I guess short and sweet is good
too.
